It's that time again....job search time. :| But this time, it's for real. Before, I would just be looking for an internship or just getting some practice on interviews and such. I do find looking for a job to be depressing. You get all excited that a company has called you back, and then they slam the door in your face. :(
This time of year usually starts off with Seminole Futures. Somehow I landed an interview before Seminole Futures. First let me talk about my feelings on Seminole Futures. It's a great place to collect pens, pads of paper, and sometimes real fun goodies. Other than that, I haven't seen much greatness come out of it. You whore yourself around, passing out your résumé left and right, and listening to a recording at each table you stop at. I have the attention span of an 8 year old at these career fairs. The recruiters (who usually are not technical) start talking about how great their company is and then I ask them a question or two (just to make it seem like I'm really interested in their company). At this point, I usually start tuning out and wondering what I'm going to have for lunch.
After the career fair comes the interviews--the on-campus interviews. The b.s. interviews where you answer the typical behavioral questions. If I don't get too nervous and blab about something extremely off-topic, I might get a chance at a second interview. That has yet to happen for me. But I know plenty of my friends that have gotten the second interview, been flown out to an office, put up in a nice hotel, interview, and fly back to find out they didn't get a job.
All my opportunities have come out of me going out on my own to pursue leads, sans any connection to the FSU Career Center.
I have my first real interview this week. The company is flying me out to the office where the position is located. I hope I do well on this interview.
